How's Your Business?

Think of your practice as a 3-legged stool.
Leg 1 ~ YOUR Profession

Leg 2 ~ The Business Infrastructure
Leg 3 ~ Marketing
The ideal situation is when the three legs of your stool are all solid and of equal length. When they are, you're sitting pretty! When they're not, you're probably finding it more and more difficult to keep your practice running smoothly, attract new clients, and serve all clients as well as you'd like.
For professionals, especially those of us who are in practice by ourselves, keeping a balanced stool is quite challenging.
  • Typically, we've achieved our current level of success because we're good at what we do.

  • We want our success to be based on what we do well and that's what we want to spend our time doing.
  • Our education and our training focused more on learning to be a professional than on practice management and marketing. Even those whose training included these two areas, what we learned was quite basic and then we were left to learn and master these on our own.

  • And often we say to ourselves we don't have the time to learn about these two critical keys to success because we're so busy serving our clients and doing the administrative tasks we do have in place.
Please, please, please know that while you may already feel overwhelmed and believe you can't take on another project or task, in the long run, even in the immediate future, you'll be glad you do work on your business as well as in your business and that means you devote some time to both your business infrastructure and your marketing.

  • If you've been a "Lone Ranger" ...
  • If you're determined to survive and thrive in today's economy ...
  • If you want to take your practice to the next level ...

Then I encourage you to examine the structure of your stool. There are many people, products and programs available to help you develop the knowledge and skills you need to build a strong and sturdy business to support your practice and to take your message to YOUR world.
And many of these resources are low cost, sometimes even free. For example, you can start by reading the rest of this page and you'll find additional resources throughout this as well.
Leg 1 ~ YOUR Profession
Ideally, you love your profession. You enjoy serving your ideal clients. You continue to study and learn more and then
Your Passion is what fuels you, what motivates you, what you get excited about. Hopefully is what your Purpose and Profession are aligned with and it's what you want to spend more of your time on. The clearer you are about your passion, the better. Your Profession
You are confident about your competence in this area, aren't you?
So let's focus on the other two legs, shall we?
Leg 2 ~ The Business Infrastructure

  • Is your practice as profitable as you would like?
  • Does your practice run as smoothly as you'd like?
If you answered YES to both these questions, you can skip down to the third leg, Marketing. Otherwise, take a deep breath, let it out slowly and read on.

Imagine for a moment that it's six months into the future and your new marketing initiatives have been so successful that your practice has doubled. Could you take exceptional care of all those you now serve?

If not, you have 6 months to get ready.

The business infrastructure includes all that support your profession, and includes all matters of finances, administration, human resources, legal, and such. As these areas are ongoing aspects of your business, and you repeat the tasks over and over again on a regular basis, you want to put systems, processes and procedures in place so you don't have to reinvent the wheel each time you do them. While some are easy to remember because you do them daily or weekly, many are monthly and some you only do once a year. By creating set ways of doing them, by documenting them ~ yes, that means writing them down ~ it makes your life easier. More important, you can delegate more and more of these tasks and they'll be done the way you want them done because you've created detailed instruction someone else can follow.

Ideally, while you are developing your marketing plan and the materials you'll need to spread the word about what you're offering, you are also evaluating and improving your business infrastructure.
If you'd like help evaluating and improving your business infrastructure, remember, I'm the Energizer Bonnie, at your service.
